3rd Trimester

3rd Trimester- 28 weeks to 40 weeks (Months 7-9)

28 weeks visit

  • Listen to fetal heart tones with Doppler
  • Check weight, blood pressure, urinalysis
  • Fundal height will be measured
  • Labs results from the last visit will be reviewed
  • Discuss Tdap vaccine
  • If Rh negative mother:

3D/4D ultrasound appointment- We obtain the best images when this ultrasound is performed at 27-30 weeks gestation.  Schedule your appointment at our office!

30 weeks visit

  • Listen to fetal heart tones with Doppler
  • Check weight, blood pressure, urinalysis
  • Fundal height will be measured
  • If labs were done on the previous visit, the results would be reviewed
  • Discuss fetal kick counts
  • Discuss plan to register at the hospital before to delivery. Discuss classes offered at the hospital: birthing class, breastfeeding class, baby basics class.  The patient may register if interested in any classes.

32 weeks visit

  • Listen to fetal heart tones with Doppler
  • Check weight, blood pressure, urinalysis
  • Fundal height will be measured

34 weeks visit

  • Listen to fetal heart tones with Doppler
  • Check weight, blood pressure, urinalysis
  • Fundal height will be measured

36 weeks visit

  • Listen to fetal heart tones with Doppler
  • Check weight, blood pressure, urinalysis
  • Fundal height will be measured
  • Obtain GBS culture
  • Obtain ultrasound to evaluate baby’s position
  • Discuss labor signs and delivery of baby

37 weeks visit

  • Listen to fetal heart tones with Doppler
  • Check weight, blood pressure, urinalysis
  • Fundal height will be measured
  • Discuss GBS result
  • Possibly check for cervical dilation

38 weeks visit

  • Listen to fetal heart tones with Doppler
  • Check weight, blood pressure, urinalysis
  • Fundal height will be measured
  • Possibly check for cervical dilation

39 weeks visit

  • Listen to fetal heart tones with Doppler
  • Check weight, blood pressure, urinalysis
  • Fundal height will be measured
  • Possibly check for cervical dilation

40 weeks visit

  • Listen to fetal heart tones with Doppler
  • Check weight, blood pressure, urinalysis
  • Fundal height will be measured
  • Check for cervical dilation
  • Discuss plan for induction if not delivered at 41 weeks

Mother’s Physical Changes During the 3rd Trimester

You are almost there!  These are some of the more common changes you may encounter during the third trimester:

  • Numbness in hands
  • Stronger baby kicks
  • Increasing vaginal discharge
  • Achiness in lower abdomen
  • Increasing backache
  • Mild swelling hands/feet
  • Varicose veins
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Stretch marks
  • Mild shortness of breath
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Occasional Braxton Hicks contractions
  • Leaking from nipples
  • Heartburn
  • Pelvic pressure

Baby’s Development During the 3rd Trimester

  • The baby grows rapidly, gaining about half a pound a week during and after the eight-month.
  • By the last two months of pregnancy, baby’s five senses are fully developed. In fact, the baby is making lots of progress in physical, social and cognitive development.
  • The baby can hear people talk and distinguish among some speech sounds. He/she responds to sounds with movements and a change in heart rate.  The baby recognizes music that is repeatedly played.
  • Twins may interact in the womb.
  • The baby explores his/her hands and face through touch.
  • The baby’s brain begins to look like one, and the brain connections are developing at an astonishing speed.
